Since Israel is one of the least religious countries (Haaretz) what is a Jew?

 Shayne Chester

As the arguments around antisemitism become more absurd, its time to go back to the beginning.
Since Israel is one of the least religious countries (Haaretz) what is a Jew?
Comments about Jews come loaded with a lot of false assumptions ("This is what they preach in their book" etc). "Jew" can refer to several different things at once: an ethnicity, a people, a matrilineal inheritance, a culture, and a religion. Which meaning is intended depends on the context. A Jew can be an atheist.
Jewish identity in Israel is expressed through language (especially Hebrew), family heritage, national history, holidays, and culture rather than religious practice.
