They called it the "American Dream" deliberately. A dream is something that happens to you individually. You work hard. You rise. You make it. Your story. Not: We organize. We demand. We take collective power over the conditions of our lives. The Dream is explicitly individualist because individualism is the solvent that dissolves solidarity. You cannot have a union of people who each privately believe that their situation is their personal responsibility and their escape is their personal project. The Dream was the most elegant anti-union propaganda ever produced. It didn't attack unions directly. It made the entire concept of collective action feel unnecessary. Feel small. Feel like something for people who didn't believe in themselves enough.
