🔺 Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei took a pointed swipe at U.S. negotiating tactics Wednesday, citing the International Court of Justice to define what genuine negotiations actually require. “The concept of ‘negotiations’ requires, at the very least, a genuine attempt to engage in discussions with a view to resolving the dispute,” Baqaei wrote, quoting an ICJ judgment from 2011. “It needs ‘good faith’ — meaning that ‘negotiations’ is not ‘disputation’; nor is it ‘dictation’, ‘deception’, ‘extortion’ or ‘coercion’.” The post is a thinly veiled accusation that Washington’s approach — combining military blockade with maximalist demands and surrender — fails to meet the basic legal definition of negotiation under international law.
