“We could not get to a situation where the Iranians could accept our terms.”
Those words just now from Vice President JD Vance demonstrate the fundamental flaw in these "negotiations"--a simplistic expectation on the part of the US that Iran would agree to American terms in the span of hours or days.
That is not a negotiation. That is an ultimatum. Those are two very different things.
To offer an ultimatum and have it be accepted, the other party has to perceive itself as having no choice--in other words, to be weak enough that they have to accept terms, rather than begin talks.
Iran does not see itself as that weak...far from it. So why would the US think it could go in and dictate terms?
A very discouraging update indeed.
