"GIVING UP IS NOT PART OF OUR VOCABULARY"
Cuba's President Miguel Diaz-Canel was asked by an MSNBC reporter whether he would step down to end the US blockade of the Caribbean island. His answer is clear: The concept of revolutionaries giving up and stepping down is not part of our vocabulary."
The Cuban premier explained to the journalist, recycling state department lines, that the question itself is ridiculous, one she would never ask any other president of a sovereign state. He spelt out for her the fact that Cuban leadership is elected by its people from the grassroots level and that the US has no moral high ground to demand anything from Cuba, considering it bears the full responsibility for the ongoing humanitarian crisis that millions of Cubans are living in.
The reality is, whether it be Marco Rubio or Donald Trump himself, the US's Cuba policy is one that has always reflected imperialist desire to control and dominate countries in their so-called backyard. But Havana has always been resilient, fought for its revolution, its self-determination and survived countless regime change operations and its elders' infinite assassination attempts.
The ghosts of Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos still haunt Washington. The fact that an island off the coast of Florida has managed to stay steadfast during decades of sanctions, political pressure, nuclear crises, and more, is a bad example for the bullish dominance that America tries to exert around the world.
