Gaza did something the history books could never do.
It made Americans watch their government's logic operate in real time, without the buffer of decades, without the soft focus of retrospect, without the documentaries that arrive thirty years later to make everyone feel thoughtful about atrocities that are safely finished.
They watched it as it happened.
They watched their politicians use the same language.
The same justifications.
The same framework of who counts as a civilian, who counts as a human being, whose grief is legible and whose is not.
And the generation that grew up being told "we didn't know" about Vietnam, knew.
They knew in real time.
They had no excuse of ignorance.
And many of them looked at that, and looked back at everything they'd been taught, and understood that the ignorance was never accidental.
It was a product.
It was manufactured.
Gaza didn't recontextualize American history.
It proved that American history never stopped happening.
