Empire doesn't just take your resources.
It takes your sense of reality.
It tells you that your poverty is your culture.
That your instability is your nature.
That the reason your country is struggling has nothing to do with decades of intervention, imposed debt, propped-up dictators, and deliberately destabilized institutions.
And then it offers to "help."
With development loans that come with conditions.
With democracy promotion that promotes the right kind of democracy.
With civil society funding for the right kind of civil society.
The system that broke you is offering to fix you.
And it calls the people who refuse this offer "authoritarian."
