This optimism is without justification or evidence. After four weeks of merciless bombing by the United States and Israel against Iran, we have failed to bring them to their knees. Their form of government continues to function. Their speedboat navy is almost untouched, as is their underwater torpedoes as well as submarine force. Their missile forces may have been degraded slightly, but clearly remain viable as a system. Their proxies in the region are still active, and in fact, are escalating their involvement against US and Israeli interests. And above all, Hormuz remains firmly in Iranian control, and hence the life blood of a global economy is controlled by Tehran. There is literally no military plan that the US can execute to force Iran to back down. We have tried everything, and everything has failed. The one thing that has not been tried, however, is a ground operation, and if that is what the secretary has in mind, he will be deepening an already historic strategic failure that has been baked in for the United States. If he adds substantial American casualties to the tragedy, the entire government will be worthy of either mass resignation, or group impeachment.
