Excerpt from Haaretz - analysis of Chuck Freilich, a former deputy national security adviser in Israel & academic at Columbia and Tel Aviv University: The First Worrying Daylight Between the U.S. and Israel Emerges as They Battle Iran 🧵 ‘As recent polls show, Israel's standing in American public opinion has never been lower, but strategic cooperation between the two countries has never been closer… The paradox is even greater for a second reason. In the early decades of the relationship, a confluence of shared values and policy objectives peaked, but strategic cooperation was nonexistent to minimal. In more recent decades, we have witnessed a growing policy disagreement, mainly on the Palestinian issue, but strategic cooperation has grown steadily… By the time Hamas attacked in October 2023, a growing policy divide had led to an impending crisis in the relationship. Joe Biden's extraordinary wartime support for Israel, over considerable opposition from within the U.S. president's own party, postponed the crisis, but the controversial prosecution of the drawn-out war ultimately amplified the divide. Today, polls show a collapse of support for Israel among Democrats, a decline among Republicans and an overall majority of Americans who now favor the Palestinians over Israel. Once again, the personal role played by the U.S. president, over the objections of much of his political base, has made all the difference. The United States and Israel began the current war with, essentially, a complete congruence of strategic objectives: toppling the Iranian regime, severely downgrading Iran's missile capability for a protracted period, completing the destruction of the nuclear program and further weakening Iran's regional proxies.’ Cont
