The massive attacks by United States and Israel on Iran’s oil depots—causing crude oil to rain over Tehran and poisoning the air, land, and water—constitute environmental warfare and amount to war crimes under international law. Articles 35(3) and 55 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions explicitly prohibit methods of warfare that cause widespread, long-term, and severe damage to the natural environment. Deliberately striking oil infrastructure in a manner that releases massive quantities of pollutants over a densely populated city is precisely the type of conduct these provisions were designed to prevent. The prohibition is reinforced by Article 8(2)(b)(iv) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which classifies as a war crime launching attacks knowing they will cause widespread, long-term, and severe environmental damage that is clearly excessive in relation to any anticipated military advantage. Turning the skies of Tehran into a rain of crude oil and contaminating the environment of millions s a textbook case of criminal environmental destruction.
