International law doesn't mean anything to the gang of thugs and war criminals running Israel, but threatening to assassinate a foreign minister (FM ) to extort concessions from a country at the negotiating table is on a whole new level.
The entire international community bears responsibility to condemn these threats and convene an Emergency Security Council meeting to address the situation.
The Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties (VCLT), which reflects customary international law binding on all states, prohibits procuring any consent or concession through coercion of a state’s representative.
Article 51 explicitly states:
“The expression of a State’s consent to be bound by a treaty which has been procured by the coercion of its representative through acts or threats directed against him shall be without any legal effect.”
Threatening to assassinate a foreign minister — a direct act or threat directed against the representative — to extort concessions is precisely the coercion the VCLT forbids. Any resulting agreement or concession would be legally void from the outset.
This also violates the 1973 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Internationally Protected Persons (which Israel itself has ratified). Foreign ministers are expressly protected persons under the treaty. Any threat to murder them constitutes incitement to commit a grave international crime and triggers the obligation of every state to prevent and punish it.
UN Secretary-General must intervene immediately under his legal authority to uphold the Vienna Convention, the 1973 Convention, and the foundations of international law, condemn these threats without delay, convene the necessary emergency mechanisms, and ensure that no state is allowed to extort concessions through assassination threats.
