The White House is already planning a mid-May Xi summit in Beijing with the assumption the conflict will be over by then. He told an associate the war is "distracting from his other priorities." But here's the tension: his own Pentagon chief said "we negotiate with bombs," and Trump admitted Hegseth and the Joint Chiefs chairman were "quite disappointed" by the idea of a deal. They wanted to keep going. Trump floated securing U.S. access to Iranian oil as part of any agreement. That confirms what this war was always about. Not nuclear weapons. Not freedom.
