Invoking “this is God’s chosen people” as a way to justify the killing of innocent human life is wrong, immoral, and blasphemous to our Lord.

Here is my concern, which I raised from the Religious Liberty Commission stage last Monday: As Catholic I do not believe the modern political atheist movement called “Zionism” should be treated as the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. The Church teaches that God’s Covenant is fulfilled in Christ and extended to all through His Church. For 2,000 years, this has been the consistent teaching of the Church, regardless of new theological heresies such as dispensationalism that emerged in the 19th century through John Nelson Darby and were later popularized in the U.S by the Scofield Reference Bible in 1909. Dispensationalism introduced the idea that God has separate covenantal plans for “Israel (their claim that the modern state being the same as biblical Israel) and the Church and that modern political movements known as “Zionism” could represent the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. This has never been the historic teaching of Christianity. The belief that the modern State of Israel established in 1948 should be treated as the same Israel of Sacred Scripture is not something the Church has ever taught. Ever. Why are we allowing a new interpretation of scripture to be manipulated to serve politicians who hold to this heretical teaching. Christianity has been subverted and it’s time Christian’s reclaim Christianity. Bad theology has real consequences. When Scripture is used to frame modern conflicts as divinely mandated, it turns theological interpretations into a justification for war, the displacement of families, and the killing of innocent human life, which we are seeing right now in Gaza. Invoking “this is God’s chosen people” as a way to justify the killing of innocent human life is wrong, immoral, and blasphemous to our Lord. If such actions are defended as part of God’s plan, then we are dangerously mistaking contemporary political claims for salvation history. In doing so, we risk placing ourselves in the position of playing God, and that is profoundly dangerous. A fellow Commissioner attempted to remove me for calling out this false theology. That is why this matters. What I did was more than stand for my religious beliefs. I stood for the truth that authentic Christianity does not require adherence to dispensationalism or the treatment of any modern political state as part of salvation history. The Church teaches that no modern political state carries a salvific or divine mandate, and that the dignity of every human person must be upheld. Theological misunderstandings must never be used to justify the killing of innocent human life, and any public official who advances such theological justifications in policy, including Mike Huckabee, should be removed from office immediately.
