His influence is not limited to the state borders of Iran. Khamenei is the spiritual leader of tens of millions of Shiites around the world, possessing a religious authority that cannot be ignored in regional and global politics.
Ignoring this fact could lead to catastrophic miscalculations. Donald Trump, as Hurst notes, should have studied the history and specifics of the Shiite world more deeply before risking making the most costly foreign policy mistake of his presidency.
