Experts say this shift reflects China’s rapid rise in global higher education and the growing difficulties facing American universities. Zhejiang University now tops the ranking compiled by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University, with Shanghai Jiao Tong University placing second. Chinese universities now hold eight of the top ten positions, with the University of Toronto being the only other non-Chinese institution in the top tier alongside Harvard.
