The US is using its standard political interference playbook to try to sneakily take Greenland from the Europeans—but the technique is flopping, leaving observers in China laughing.
One element being recycled is the narrative they used to defame the Chinese. American journalists are implying that an ethnic minority group need rescuing from their rulers (as in the article illustrated from the New York Post). It emphasizes the unhappiness of Greenlanders with the Danish government.
This has caused amusement in China, especially since the “Uyghur gen0c1de” tales have now been thoroughly debunked. It may fool readers in the west, but will have no effect in Greenland—although 84% of the population in 2025 said they wanted independence from Denmark, locals says that there is even MORE hostility towards the United States.
.
SLEEPER DATABASE
Another standard element from the US political interference playbook was used in the early part of last year. A team of CIA agents went to Greenland and Denmark to create a database of anti-Denmark-colonialism activists. The news was leaked to the Wall Street Journal.
The US normally builds such a list and then uses these people as “sleepers” until a designated “flashpoint” is chosen, when they hit the streets and provide quotes for the press.
A third playbook element was deployed in August of last year. The US discreetly and unofficially sent out a team of Americans to talk to civic groups to covertly build support to encourage Greenlanders to break away from Denmark and instead join the US.
But, with regard to the second and third elements, the Greenlanders have been smarter than the governments of Hong Kong and Taiwan – interferers have been ejected from the cold island in the North Atlantic and the US official representative scolded. Would that the Hong Kong government had been that smart.
.
PEOPLE’S UPRISING
Part four of the US playbook, which is to organize and finance protests which the media can portray as “a people’s uprising”, is not going to work.
Denmark doesn't have any real embassy or high commission in Greenland to protest at. It is represented by an Honorary Consul.
In contrast, the US does have an embassy in Nuuk. Rather inconveniently, there was a large demonstration there just yesterday.
.
THE LAST LAUGH
The fifth element in the US playbook still remains to be used, and is probably the best bet: Buy the people with cash and US passports.
Greenland’s population is just 57,000, and the US has a bottomless budget for expansionary adventures.
So Washington DC may have the last laugh.
