In a powerful exchange on British radio station LBC, a caller named Abigail dismantled the imperial logic behind the US intervention in Venezuela, noting how it is the latest chapter in a centuries-old history of colonial extraction.
Abigail struck at the heart of the Global North's wealth by reminding the audience that Northern Europe and its imperial offshoots possess almost none of the vital resources required for modern civilisation. And yet, she added, it attained its "First World" status not through inherent superiority, but via "looting and pillaging everybody else" for centuries.
When the interviewer attempted to introduce "nuance" by labelling Venezuela's kidnapped president Nicolas Maduro a "dictator," Abigail refused to take the bait. She pointed out that the label is simply a tool used by the "old white man" to justify deciding the fate of a "brown country's" resources.
In addition, she went on to highlight the ultimate hypocrisy of Western foreign policy. After invading, destabilising, and extracting the wealth of sovereign nations, the West acts surprised by the resulting resentment.
As the US moves to seize Venezuela’s oil, we should avoid recognising this as a new event and instead understand the reality for what it is: the continuation of a long, bloody history of imperial theft.
