Political discourse is about to turn incredibly toxic and dangerous in Australia in the wake of this horrific attack, which has left 16 people dead in Bondi, Australia. Malignant political entrepreneurs are already seizing and fixating on the identity of the Bondi attackers to legitimize anti-immigrant rhetoric, Islamophobia, and pro-Israel narratives. These individuals will deliberately ignore or downplay anything that disrupts their hateful and divisive politics, including the fact that the hero of the day - Ahmed al-Ahmed - who saved countless numbers of lives by courageously crash tackling one of the shooters, is a Muslim migrant from Idlib, Syria. Sadly, his heroism is unlikely to stop the torrent of racist and vengeful vitriol that’s coming down the pipe. Netanyahu and pro-Israel groups in Australia are already blaming the attack on the Australian Government signaling support for an independent Palestinian state and end to the criminal Israeli occupation of Palestine. His claim is not only absurd but also incredibly devious! I don’t know of a single Palestinian individual or pro-Palestine activist who is not utterly sickened or has not unequivocally condemned yesterday’s attack on Jewish Australians. But Israel is already weaponizing the Bondi attack by trying to dupe Australians into believing that Israel and the West are locked in a “civilizational war” against Islam, when in reality the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has absolutely ZERO to do with religion and EVERYTHING to do with territory - specifically Palestinian land that Israel has illegally occupied since 1967. This reality is crystallized by the way in which American and European Jewish groups count among Palestine’s most vocal supporters and Israel’s strongest critics. The attached image celebrating the Muslim hero was produced by one such Jewish organization. They deserve great praise for promoting solidarity in a tumultuous time. That a Muslim hero risked his own life to save Jewish lives is an antidote to every pernicious and poisonous lie you are likely to encounter on social media in the coming days. Please seek out information that aims only to unite rather than divide. Solidarity and social cohesion is how you conquer those who aim to exploit tragedy by tearing us apart.
