The UNGA voted overwhelmingly today to “endorse” the New York Declaration put forward by France & Saudi Arabia. Among its many problematic provisions, the Declaration supports a “stabilization force” (with many bad elements as well), instead of a protection force as such. But the resolution adopted today does NOT mandate a stabilization force. It merely called for one to be proposed in the Security Council, where the US will certainly veto it. The push therefore continues for an emergency special session of the UNGA under Uniting for Peace to adopt “further measures” in association with the one year UNGA deadline last year. Those measures could still include: sanctions, military embargo, denial of Israel’s credentials, a tribunal, anti-apartheid mechanisms, and a protection force. It is an uphill climb. But as the genocide rages, let all delegations say yes or no to the call for protection (not normalization) under the glare of publicity (not in the shadows of Turtle Bay).
