A joint statement was issued today by eight Arab and OIC leaders following their multilateral summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The readout, shared by Qatar’s foreign ministry, lays out the following: ▪️ Humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza: Leaders described the situation as “unbearable,” citing the mass civilian toll, regional instability, and wider impact on the Muslim world. They rejected forced displacement and emphasized the right of displaced Palestinians to return. ▪️ Immediate ceasefire: The statement called for immediately ending the war and achieving a ceasefire that would include the release of captives and entry of sufficient humanitarian aid — described as the first step toward a just and lasting peace. ▪️ Thanks to Trump: Leaders thanked President Trump for convening the summit and stressed the importance of his leadership to end the war and open “horizons for peace.” ▪️ Stabilization plans: The group emphasized the need for stabilization measures, including safeguarding the West Bank and Jerusalem’s holy sites. They voiced support for reform efforts within the Palestinian Authority. ▪️ Reconstruction of Gaza: Leaders affirmed the need for a comprehensive reconstruction plan for Gaza, grounded in the Arab and OIC framework, supported by international assistance, and coordinated with Palestinian leadership. ▪️ Security arrangements: They backed security guarantees to accompany reconstruction and stabilization, with international partners playing a role. ▪️ Next steps: The statement stressed maintaining momentum, presenting the summit as the start of a process toward peace and regional cooperation. Notably absent: The joint statement makes no mention of Hamas or the Palestinian resistance — central actors in the war, holding Israeli captives, and a necessary party to any real ceasefire deal. The process, as framed, is centered on Trump, Israel, and regional governments.
