Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent talks about a “beautiful rebalancing” - where China stops exporting and the U.S. starts manufacturing again.
But then, he brings up Japan. He says he met Shinzo Abe before Abe became PM, praises Japan’s “reforms,” and calls Japan’s economic performance “remarkable” - as if the U.S. didn’t destroy Japan’s growth through the Plaza Accord and decades of pressure.
Let’s be real:
When America says “rebalancing,” they mean control.
When they say “cooperation,” they mean concession.
When they cite Japan, they mean: Look how we broke them. Why can’t China be next?
But sorry - this isn’t 1985.
China doesn’t bend. China builds.
