USAID is touted as a foreign assistance agency that helps "freedom fighters" and provides healthcare. But the reality is much more murky. I've identified USAID-funded efforts that have worked to censor and smear Americans, including initiatives targeting Mark Bittman, Jeffrey Sachs, Glenn Greenwald, Michael Pollan, Vivek Ramaswamy, Max Blumenthal, Rep. Andy Biggs, John Mearsheimer. The foreign aid nexus provides a convenient cover. The American government has difficulty funding direct propaganda against its own citizens, but USAID funds private contractors that fund NGOs abroad that are free of such constraints and have plausible deniability when engaging in smear or censorship campaigns.
