Just so we're all on the same page about the state of free speech in the UK at the moment, let me be very clear: every time I write an article like the one linked below, I risk 15 years in jail. As the law is currently being malevolently interpreted by the UK police, backed by the Starmer government, anything they deem to "encourage support for Hamas" – ie anything that isn't utterly and knee-jerkingly condemnatory of Hamas, even its political and administrative wings, or anything that might put Hamas in a better light than Israel – violates the draconian Terrorism Act. One might wonder how it is possible to do real journalism in such circumstances. The answer is, it isn't. The BBC and other establishment media outlets long ago abandoned any proper journalism on the Israel-Palestine topic. But even should they wish to take on the Israel lobby and British government, which they don't, they would be playing with fire in the current circumstances. They would risk early-morning raids from the police, or detention at the airport, as has already happened to independent journalists such as Richard Medhurst, Craig Murray, Asa Winstanley and Sarah Wilkinson, and to Jewish academics and activists, such as Haim Bresheeth, Tony Greenstein and Yael Kahn, who oppose the genocide in Gaza. We are all living under this government-enforced cloud of censorship – one that grows larger and looms more menacingly each day. The goal is to so terrorise us that we fall silent and allow the UK-backed genocide in Gaza to carry on. It is soon going to take nerves of steel to tell even the simplest truths.

In reducing Hamas simply to monsters, Israel’s goal was to dehumanise the entire population of Gaza – to justify its genocidal crimes. And yet repeated scenes of Israeli captives demonstrating a human connection to their Hamas captors make that idea harder to sustain. Which is
