is a strong articulate courageous academic opposing genocide and Zionism because of the dehumanisation, dispossession and murder of her people.
She should not be able to advocate for an end to a crime against humanity, and for self determination for her people, because …. It makes some people feel ‘unsafe’? What exactly does that mean? Uncomfortable? Upset? Offended?
What is being advocated for is the suppression of free speech for those stating facts/expressing views a group don’t like, and oppression, intimidation, harassment and punishment by way of losing jobs, funding, law-fare for those people who dare offend them. Welcome to Australia in 2024/25 (and some other Western countries).
Over and over again I’m told by people across various govt work environments they are harassed, oppressed, intimidated, counselled and threatened with being sacked, because they state they oppose the genocide or display or wear a symbol of Palestine. How is it our institutions are taking a side in this conflict, in defence of the sensibilities of those supporting an apartheid state conducting a genocide?
What about the safety of all those in the workplace who are experiencing this anti Palestinian racism? Work for them has indeed become ‘unsafe’, and they are too frightened to speak up about it because they will lose their jobs. They need somewhere safe where they can report what is happening to them. I suspect we would be horrified at the number of people this is happening to.
We need a reset for our country because we’re on a dangerous path. All we are getting are dog whistles and a competition to see who can take us deeper and faster towards fascism.
To argue University is a place where you go to ensure you do not have your thoughts and beliefs challenged, is counterintuitive.
These attacks on free speech have to stop. The authors are calling for anyone wishing to support Randa to contact them.
