When Jerusalem was recaptured by Salahiddine (Saladin) in 1187, and returned to Muslim rule, the remaining soldiers of the Crusader army were allowed safe passage out of the city. Despite having been massacred by the Crusaders only decades earlier, the Muslims victors did not display the same barbarity. Rather, they were merciful and welcoming, per the teachings of Islam.
