Treaty of Umar Ibn Khattab, agreed to between the second Caliph Umar and the Christians of Jerusalem in 636 AD/CE. It should be noted that following the implementation of this treaty, Jews who had been exiled from Rome for 500 years were allowed back into Jerusalem to practice their faith. The treaty declared that the lives and possessions of Christians, their domiciles, their places of worship and all that concerns their religion, shall not be placed under any constraint, nor shall any Christian be harmed.

One of the Islamic leaders I have had the honor and privilege to meet and learn from is Imam Faisal Ahmad of the Fiqh Institute and Dawah Center in Watervliet,
New York. He brought to my attention the Treaty of Umar Ibn Khattab, agreed to between the second Caliph Umar and the Christians of Jerusalem in 636 AD/CE.
This treaty remained in place until 1099, when the Crusaders captured Jerusalem and put its non-Christian inhabitants to the sword.
For all those who profess Sharia law for post-Assad Syria, you need to demand that the terms of the Treaty of Umar Ibn Khattab be incorporated into the Syrian Constitution, and apply to all faiths and creeds equally.
Otherwise how can one take you seriously.
I thank Imam Faisal Ahmad for his wisdom and guidance, and for helping educate me on this important aspect of Islam and Islamic history.
