Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip killed dozens more Palestinians on Thursday, including an orthopedic surgeon in northern Gaza who was traveling between hospitals.
Gaza’s Health Ministry said an Israeli quadcopter drone shot and killed Dr. Saeed Joda while he was traveling from Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia to Al-Awda Hospital in Jabalia. Both northern Gaza cities have been under a total Israeli siege since early October as part of an ethnic cleansing campaign.
Dr. Joda was believed to be the last orthopedic surgeon in northern Gaza and was injured in a previous strike but continued to work. The Health Ministry said that his killing brought the total number of medical staff killed by Israel since October 2023 to 1,057.
“We call on all workers in the health system in all countries of the world to stand in solidarity with our health teams in the Gaza Strip, where the sector is being subjected to genocide,” the ministry wrote on Telegram.
On Thursday evening, Israeli strikes pounded the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, targeting several homes. At least 33 Palestinians were reported killed in the attacks, including children. Medical sources told Al Jazeera that at least 71 Palestinians were killed in strikes across the Strip on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, the Health Ministry released its daily death toll update, saying 30 Palestinians were killed and 99 were wounded over the previous 24-hour period. The ministry only counts dead and wounded Palestinians who were brought to hospitals and morgues.
“There are still a number of victims under the rubble and on the streets, and ambulance and civil defense crews cannot reach them,” the ministry wrote on Telegram.
The ministry said, based on its numbers, that the death toll since October 2023 has risen to 44,835 martyrs, and the number of wounded has reached 106,356.
A group of American healthcare workers who volunteered in Gaza estimated in an open letter to President Biden in October that the US-backed Israeli onslaught has killed at least 118,908 Palestinians, a total that includes indirect deaths caused by the Israeli siege. Dr. Feroze Sidhwa, who led the letter, told Antiwar.com in a recent interview that the estimate was the bare minimum they came up with by looking at the available data.
