Xi Jinping Says China Ready to Work With US to Repair Relations

Biden and Xi are set to hold a virtual summit in the coming days

Ahead of a virtual summit with President Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping said China is “ready to work with the United States” to repair relations between the two powers. Xi made the call in a letter to the National Committee on US-China Relations (NCUSCR) that was read by Chinese Ambassador to the US Qin Gang.

“President Xi Jinping, in a congratulatory letter to @NCUSCR, said that following the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, China stands ready to work with the United States to enhance exchanges and cooperation across the board,” Qin wrote on Twitter.

President Biden also addressed a letter to the NCUSCR that praised the organization’s work, but it did not have as much of a conciliatory tone as Xi’s. “Through the advocacy of organizations like yours, we can seek greater connectivity and advancement of interests that affect our countries and the world,” Bidens said, according to China’s US Embassy.

Politico reported Wednesday that the Xi-Biden virtual summit is “tentatively scheduled” for November 15th. The meeting will come as tensions are soaring between the US and China over various issues, including US support for Taiwan and increased US military activity in sensitive areas like the South China Sea.

The White House has portrayed the Biden-Xi talks as a way to “manage the competition” with China as opposed to reducing tensions. “This is part of our ongoing efforts to responsibly manage the competition between our countries,” the White House deputy press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, told reporters of the planned summit.
