of white warriors and monkey king tales.
The racism that lies deep within white Australia peeps through even when the talk is about a need to engage with Asia. The walk remains white and the engagement is driven by purely economic needs. The Nation of the' Fair Go' cannot really look beyond its deep set white history, it seems.
That an educated , ex minster can use language like this with even seeing the hidden but deep set racism doesn't really surprise me. I just find it a bit shocking that she cannot see the undertones built into how she is saying what she obviously thinks is a positive message.
Australia will , i think , continue as a WASP outpost down under. Complete with American Llistening Posts and Army bases , It will be of the West for the West for quite a while yet.
A "white warriors" nation.
Liberal and Labor governments have trimmed expenditures on teaching Asian languages. There are arguments either side of the debate about the merits of this. One side says we have a high number of Asian speakers, Asians have tremendous proficiency in English and English is the international language, so we ought not panic. The other says being monolingual just does not equip you for the modern world and stops you learning all the other things you learn about another culture when you learn their language.
After all, we need help them understand that there is a great big world out there that is neither white, nor Anglo-Saxon, nor Christian - and to whet their appetite to learn more.
The various Monkey King tales are more important than you might think.
