work free of judgment and commerce

Vivian Maier "didn’t participate commercially in the culture of her time, because she didn’t sell or exhibit her photographs, because her work “has not played its part in shaping how we see the world in the way that [Diane] Arbus’s has,” it should be relegated to the status of “visual echo.” At best, Dyer continues, these visual echoes serve a “useful purpose,” prompting questions about the status of the renowned and therefore more significant photographers who were her contemporaries."
