 made a point that deserves far more attention than it is receiving: "The nuclear weapons are in Israel, but the inspectors are in Iran." 

That single observation exposes two fundamental problems.

First, it is high time the world turned its attention to Israel's WMDs. A regime standing accused of genocide before the International Court of Justice, and led by a prime minister wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity, should not possess nuclear weapons. So, Israel's arsenal of weapons of mass destruction should become a global and regional priority.

Second, the non-proliferation regime is deeply flawed. Iran, a party to the NPT, has been subjected to sanctions, military attacks, and the assassination of its scientists, while a regime that has never joined the treaty enjoys carte blanche to possess, and potentially use, the very weapons the non-proliferation regime exists to contain.

This double standard strikes at the very legitimacy of the entire regime. When accepting inspections brings punishment and staying outside the treaty brings impunity, the message to the world is that joining the NPT is a liability. 

If the international community is serious about non-proliferation, it must begin with universality. Israel should be pressed to join the NPT as a non-nuclear-weapon member, fully disclose its past nuclear activities and record, and place all its nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards.

Until then, non-proliferation will remain the absurd exercise in double standards that it has become.
