The Telegraph asks: “If China stands for world peace, why is Beijing preparing for war?” A British newspaper asking China why it wants the ability to defend itself is almost too perfect. Britain once forced opium into China at gunpoint, waged war when China resisted, seized Hong Kong, and built an empire across the world. Even today, the United Kingdom still retains 14 Overseas Territories. China has none. Peace does not mean disarmament. It does not mean trusting former imperial powers to behave themselves. Britain taught China what happens to a country that cannot defend itself. A country that remembers the Opium Wars has every reason to make sure nobody can ever repeat them.
