Washington isn’t showing restraint because it suddenly discovered diplomacy.

The entire NYT story can be summarized in two sentences:
China has received around 1.2 million barrels of oil a day from Iran so far in 2026.
China has more leverage than the United States does.
Translation:
Washington isn’t showing restraint because it suddenly discovered diplomacy.
It is showing restraint because sanctioning China could blow back through global finance, supply chains, insurance and markets.
For decades, America’s threat was:
Obey, or lose access to our system.
China’s answer is:
Try it — and calculate what happens to your system too.
That is what declining unilateral leverage looks like.
Sanctions stop being hegemony the moment the empire imposing them has to calculate its own losses.
