Tucker Carlson has become the most prominent media figure asking why no US president can say no to Israel. In a New York Times interview, Carlson argued that American foreign policy has become captive to Israeli interests at the expense of ordinary Americans struggling with economic decline and debt . He claims Trump surrendered to Netanyahu's pressure and went to war because Israel demanded it, not because it served American national security .
The answer according to Carlson and political scientist John Mearsheimer is simple: the Israel lobby. Mearsheimer told Carlson's podcast that "the lobby has awesome power" and "there is no president willing to buck the lobby" . Carlson called pro-Israel advocates "the most vicious people I've ever dealt with" and pointed out that while every other foreign government lobbies the US openly, Israel's influence operates through a mechanism of control that remains hidden .
Carlson has also pointed to documented history of Israeli officials using blackmail against US presidents . His interview with Senator Ted Cruz went viral when Carlson pressed Cruz on why AIPAC is not registered as a foreign lobby despite coordinating with the Israeli government . Whether one agrees with Carlson or not, he has forced a question into the open that Washington has spent decades trying to suppress.
