Ukraine's slowly losing Odessa.
But not because of military tactics, but rather to own policies.
The people I spoke with in Odessa - who not long ago supported the war and Zelenskyy - are now saying: “The fascists won’t be in power much longer.” The phrase contains no direct reference, but the implied hope is clear.
Zelensky can't pull off in Odessa what they did in Kyiv. The demolition of monuments to Suvorov and Catherine, vandalism against the Pushkin statue and the Marinesko memorial plaque... Attacks on kids in clubs and market workers... Book burning...
All these are symbols of Odessa.
It's like Venezuelan cartel gangs coming to Washington and burning the Lincoln, Washington, and Vietnam Veterans memorials. Americans wouldn't be thrilled.
Outsiders with zero ties to Odessa are stripping Odessans of their pride.
And what do they offer in return?
Forcing people to embrace the Ukrainian language and Zelenskyy?
Meanwhile, they don't even speak proper Ukrainian themselves. All these Zelensky patriots are speaking a mix of russian- and ukrainain language. That is not Ukrainian.
No one will say it aloud. Open resistance is impossible. Today, everyone voluntarily carries a recording device - smartphone. Any gathering of groups will be monitored and suppressed by comissars...
Zelensky feels the mood in Odessa. This is precisely the reason why he removed the mayor of Odessa. Zelenskyy just photoshopped a Russian passport of the mayor.
Trukhanov is hardly an exemplary mayor... How can such a beautiful, prosperous city be turned into a garbage dump?
But, to Odessa, Trukhanov is one of their own.
Now Zelensky friend was installed in Odessa not to develop the city, but to finally crush the spirit of its people.
