CHINESE SCHOLARS WROTE more ultra-high-citation science papers than the rest of the world put together, a new study shows. Just over 53 per cent of academic papers in the top category came from China, said a statistical report released on 30 October. Researchers counted works published within the last two years that received enough citations to place them within the top 0.1 percent of their academic field. China had 2,342 papers in that “hottest” category, while the United States followed with 1,511. . U.S. TOP IN BROADER CATEGORY But in the broader category of publications that listed in the top one per cent of citations, China was still slightly behind the US, said the study by the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China. Yet the gap between the two is tiny – just 11 publications. China had 76,271 highly cited papers, putting it in second place with 37.41 percent of the world's total, Xinhua reported. “The gap with the United States, which holds the top position, has now narrowed to just 11 papers,” it added. Yet perhaps the most remarkable factor about the findings is how dominant the two big players are, with little space in the charts remaining for Europe, which was far ahead of the rest of the world in scientific research in the previous century.
