The Rothschilds and the Colonization of Palestine: The Truth the West Buries 1882. The Russian Empire. Jews are leaving in waves, driven by pogroms and poverty. Baron Edmond de Rothschild, the French banking magnate, opens his fortune to a project that will reshape the Middle East. He doesn't call it colonization. He calls it philanthropy. But the result is the same. Edmond de Rothschild began financing Jewish settlements in Ottoman Palestine in 1882. The settlers he supported came largely from the Russian Empire and Eastern Europe not from Palestine, where Jews were a small minority. He paid for land, farms, vineyards, administrators, and specialists. He kept struggling colonies alive. Rishon LeZion, Zikhron Ya'akov, Rosh Pina all received his money. By 1899, Edmond had transferred his Palestinian colonies and 15 million francs to the Jewish Colonisation Association (JCA), while continuing to support the settlement project. In 1924, ten years before his death, he reorganized the operation into the Palestine Jewish Colonisation Association (PICA). And whom did he put in charge? His own son, James de Rothschild. PICA continued buying land and building settlements. According to the Rothschild family's own archive, it acquired more than 125,000 acres over 50,000 hectares of Palestinian land. When Edmond died in 1934, his project included nearly 500,000 dunams and almost 30 settlements. James continued presiding over PICA after 1934. PICA operated until the 1950s. In James's 1957 will, he instructed that most of PICA's land in Israel be transferred to the Jewish National Fund (JNF). The JNF is not a charity. It is the institution that, to this day, holds land in trust for Jews only, denying Palestinians access. It is the engine of land theft that continues to dispossess Palestinians in the West Bank and inside Israel. Even after James, the Rothschild philanthropy continued. His widow Dorothy established Yad Hanadiv, which continued funding Israeli institutions. This is not "philanthropy." This is colonization. The Rothschilds were not neutral benefactors. They were financiers of a colonial project that served British imperialism and Zionist ideology. The Balfour Declaration of 1917, a letter from British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Lord Rothschild was the political counterpart to Edmond's financial operation. Britain promised a "national home" to a people who were 8-10% of the population, in a land it did not yet control. The Rothschilds provided the money. The British provided the empire. The Zionists provided the settlers. The result was the ethnic cleansing of Palestine in 1948 the Nakba when over 750,000 Palestinians were expelled and over 500 villages destroyed. The Soviet documentary you mention tells this story. The West does not. In the USSR, they called it "Zionist colonization." In the West, they call it "Jewish settlement." In the USSR, they named the financiers. In the West, they hide behind the word "philanthropy." This is the truth: the Rothschilds were not simply helping Jews. They were building a colonial state on land that belonged to Palestinians. And the institutions they created PICA, the JNF, Yad Hanadiv are still with us today. The Rothschilds are gone. The colonization continues.
