'A series of elected members of Iraq's parliament and its leaders, including the current one, have wanted the US to leave, and not been very vocal about it because they know the trouble they would get in, and have been discreetly asking the United States to leave.
That grew into a shout in secret when the Israeli outfits were discovered in the western deserts with US help, and we facilitated those bases. And when the Iraqis went out with a light force to check on it, they got shot at, and it incurred a couple of casualties. They sent a heavier force, and the Israelis and the US moved out.
It's time we left Iraq, but it is not time, if you believe in the strategy we've been carrying out for so long now, since 1978, for us to leave the entire region wholesale, and that's what's happening.'
