This is the very first time that Iran has employed a supersonic Anti-Ship Ballistic Missile against US warships. This is a major escalation on the Iranian side even though I assess they did not attempt to actually hit the USS George Washington or its destroyer escort just to bracket it as they have done in the past to show they could hit if they wanted to. Up until this point, Iran has only launched subsonic cruise missiles and drones against US warships that are easy to shoot down. 

If Trump keeps escalating the war against Iran as he is currently doing, the next time Iran could launch a massive antiship missile swarm on a US carrier strike group launching their low-end cruise missiles first to exhaust our Aegis missile interceptors before employing their supersonic and hypersonic missiles to actually hit and potentially sink one or more major US Navy warships.
