The United States sanctioned the International Criminal Court.
Not a rival. Not an enemy. The court built to prosecute war crimes.
It sanctioned the prosecutors investigating whether American soldiers committed war crimes in Afghanistan.
Then it did it again over Gaza.
After the ICC issued arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity, the United States sanctioned the prosecutor and judges involved in the Court's actions.
Think about what that means.
The country that established the Nuremberg precedent, that leaders are accountable for what they do in war, used executive orders and asset freezes to stop lawyers from asking whether its own soldiers and its allies should be held to that precedent.
That is not hypocrisy.
Hypocrisy implies a gap between stated belief and action.
This is something more deliberate: the explicit, legal, formalized assertion that accountability applies to everyone except the people writing the rules.
They didn't hide it.
They announced it.
That's not embarrassment.
That's confidence.
The confidence of a power that has never once had to sit in the dock it built for others.
