The IDF and Foreign Ministry are warning the Netanyahu government that their obsession with the NAZA movie is backfiring and bringing a lot of attention to a movie that few people cared about before. They believe this is being done for electoral reasons, despite the damage it is causing Israeli interests. An IDF source told Channel 12's Yaron Avraham (no relation): "Right now the attacking responses issued on behalf of the State of Israel are shifting the conversation away from the film itself and toward responses accusing Israel of not permitting freedom of expression. Because of this we are lowering our media profile… We are working in an orderly, planned way and not acting from the gut." A source at the Foreign Ministry said: "At the Prime Minister's Office they are fuelling the internal argument around the film for political reasons and as part of an election campaign. One hand is asking to lower the profile; the other hand is sending the head of the Shin Bet to investigate, and the ministers to demand that the film's makers be stripped of their citizenship. Israel is trapped between what is right for it internationally and what is right for politicians electorally." Israel is turning this into a huge deal so that Netanyahu can campaign against the left and change the subject from October 7. It is working and that is why today he announced new legislation to revoke citizenship from the makers of the film and other whistleblowers. The outrage is a political trick. Nothing more.
