In 2005, after New York spent three years in court trying to keep them sealed, the FDNY released more than 12,000 pages of oral histories. The firefighters who walked into the towers did not describe a simple fire. They described detonations.

Edward Cachia: the south tower “gave at a lower floor, not the floor where the plane hit.” He and his officer “originally had thought there was like an internal detonation explosives because it went in succession, boom, boom, boom, boom, and then the tower came down.”

Frank Campagna, Ladder 11: “That’s when it went. I looked back. You see three explosions and then the whole thing coming down.”

NIST FOIA video caught them in the lobby, still coated in dust, minutes after. “We was in an explosion. This the third explosion. The whole lobby collapsed on us.” Secondary explosion? “Yes it was. Definitely.”

118 of 503 firefighters and emergency workers in those department interviews described explosions or sequential blasts. Not bloggers. Not theorists. The FDNY’s own survivors, speaking to the FDNY.

The Commission and NIST heard that and wrote around it. Jet fuel. Utilities. Debris. Pancaking floors. They had the men’s words in hand and chose a story that did not have to account for them.

343 firefighters never came home. 

Their brothers said they heard bombs. 

The reports that followed asked the public to call it something else.
