Labor politician Stephen Lawrence has called out the Royal Commission for its "profound ignorance" on the foundational attributes of Israel, after Commissioner Virginia Bell asked a witness to 'put aside Zionism'.
"The truth [is] there would be no Israel without Zionism and an Israel without Zionism would be no Israel at all."
"If the Commissioner is heading towards some categorisation as presumptively antisemitic speech that delegitimises Israel, she will be making the same cardinal error that so many have made for decades: accepting a standard as applicable to the Palestinians that one would never accept for one’s own people."
