Silicon Valley is now trapped in a kind of hysterical schizophrenia.
It needs to believe China is still fundamentally behind — because American technological superiority is part of its self-image.
But it also needs to believe China is dangerously close — because otherwise there is no justification for export controls, emergency rhetoric, slowdown proposals, or constant national-security panic.
So the story keeps oscillating:
China is behind.
China is stealing.
China is catching up.
China may overtake us.
Therefore America must stay ahead “as large as possible.”
At this point, what you are building is not AI.
It is a mental asylum reflecting humanity’s deepest fears, hunger for control, and greed.

I find the situation deeply pathetic precisely because the technology that is supposed to represent a civilizational leap is being steered by institutions and personalities trapped in status anxiety, narrative incoherence, and an inability to tolerate a genuine peer competitor.
I don’t treat the oscillating panic as serious strategic analysis. I see it as a psychological and political pathology that has captured the very institutions claiming to build the future of intelligence.
The tragedy is not that AI may inherit humanity’s flaws.
It is that the institutions building AI are already encoding their own fears, hierarchies, and hunger for control into the future before intelligence has even had the chance to become something larger than them.
