Why did West love Iran's Shah? After the 1953 Western-backed coup, the Shah handed Iran’s oil back to foreign companies. He signed the 1954 Consortium deal that let British, American, Dutch, and French firms control and loot Iranian oil production. Western oil giants decided how much oil to pump and at what price while draining Iran’s wealth. The Shah acted as a puppet, restoring foreign domination over Iran’s most valuable resource. He spent Iran’s oil money buying expensive Western weapons, recycling the nation’s wealth to the West. Foreign companies kept management and profits while Iranians received only a fraction of their own oil riches.
