Trump Hits Larak Island: Putin May Test NATO Next — and Xi May Take Taiwan
This is not another Gulf strike. It is a signal that a war America cannot finish may now invite the wars it cannot afford.
David Sanger of The New York Times has argued that the Iran campaign already damaged the one asset deterrence requires: the belief that the United States can start a fight, end it, and still have force left for China and Russia. Sunday's attack on Larak Island does not reverse that. It confirms it.
Two launchers. Mines aimed at Hormuz. The first acknowledged U.S. hits inside Iran in a month. Small on the map. Loud in Moscow and Beijing. The read is obvious: Washington is still trapped in a theater it cannot close.
Sanger's warning is the part that should scare the hell out of every American. That overstretch "could tempt Vladimir Putin to try to go take a small NATO country, or at least some territory in it. It could tempt Xi Jinping to go after Taiwan."
A Russian slice of NATO territory is Article 5 under a nuclear shadow. A Chinese move on Taiwan is the world's chip supply, sea lanes, and industrial core put at risk while U.S. magazines are already thinner from months in the Gulf.
The danger is not Larak itself. It is the precedent: a war sold as quick, now a drain — strait still contested, no political end-state, forces and interceptors burned far from Europe and the Pacific. Deterrence is timing. If rivals believe America is pinned, the next test only has to be simultaneous.
That is the live risk now: Putin probing NATO's weakest edge while Xi squeezes Taiwan, forcing a choice over which alliance and which economy the United States can actually defend.
