The single greatest myth Zionists believe about Zionism is that the movement was all about rescuing Jews from persecution.

This is the basis for @bartov_omer
 argument that Zionism "went wrong." in other words, it was good when it was rescuing Jews from persecution, but then it went sour at point.

But it's all a gigantic lie. It's the single biggest lie Zionists tell themselves to make themselves feel better about apartheid and genocide.

In 1933, after the rise of Hitler to power in Nazi Germany, the British colonial regime in Palestine demanded from the Zionist leadership that 50% of immigration certificates be granted to German Jews 

[historical note: the British determined how many certificates got issued, the Zionist leadership determined who the certificates went to).

The Zionist leadership was horrified by this British idea, because there were not enough Jews of high quality "human material" from Germany. 

Zionist officials didn't consider many of the German Jews now living under Hitler real Zionists. They were "Hitler-Zionists," to use a common expression at the time. They didn't have real ideological commitment to the cause. They were not true pioneers. They were bandwagon Zionists and therefore unwanted.

And so the Zionist movement insisted that the Germans get a max of 33% or 40% of the certificates.
