The bread got financialized. The bread is a variable-rate mortgage. The bread is a medical debt collection notice. The bread is a minimum wage that hasn't kept pace with inflation for fifty years while the cost of the grain that makes it has made seventeen people into billionaires.
But the circus.
The circus is extraordinary.
The circus is a 24-hour news cycle of foreign threats and domestic culture wars and sporting events sponsored by defense contractors and political theater so total, so immersive, so continuous that the moment you turn it off you feel disoriented, as if the silence itself is dangerous.
The circus is doing the work it was always designed to do.
The crowd is not storming the bakery.
The crowd is arguing about which foreign country is most responsible for their misery.
The children are still on the island.
The island still has a flight log.
The flight log still has names on it.
The names are still not in a courtroom.
The circus is still on.
