Here is the honest version of the phrase "leader of the free world."
It means: the most powerful country on earth, whose power is currently organized around the protection of specific financial and political interests, whose justice system operates on a two-tier basis that is openly acknowledged by anyone who examines the sentencing data, whose documented history of protecting elite networks from accountability for crimes against children spans at least four decades and multiple administrations, and whose primary exports are weapons, financial instruments, and the cultural products that make all of the above seem normal.
Free world.
The word "free" is not a description of the people who live there.
It is a description of what the powerful within it are free to do.
They are free to traffic children.
They are free to bury the files.
They are free to pay the settlements.
They are free to keep the photographs.
They are free to attend the gala next month.
They are free to give the speech about "values."
They are free to point at another country, a poor country, a sanctioned country, a country that said no to the right people, and call that country a "threat to civilization."
And they are free to do all of this while the cameras are on, because the one thing they are most free from,
The one freedom that defines the whole arrangement,
Is accountability.
That freedom is the only one they were ever serious about protecting.
