They called it the American Century.
What they meant was: one hundred years of acting without consequence.
Not one hundred years of superior ideas. Not one hundred years of harder work or better values or more civilized governance.
One hundred years of being the only economy standing after two world wars that destroyed every competitor.
One hundred years of a military large enough to make the bill unpayable for anyone who tried to send it.
One hundred years of controlling the currency that everyone else needed to buy oil, which meant controlling, at the foundational level, whether other economies breathed or suffocated.
That is not a century of greatness.
That is a century of operating without a referee.
Anyone looks bold when no one can call the foul.
Anyone looks strong when the other team has no legs.
The American Century was not won. It was inherited from the rubble of a world war and maintained by the threat of nuclear annihilation.
Call it what it was.
A very long winning streak by a team that got to write the rules, hire the officials, and threaten to burn down the stadium if the score didn't go their way.
